In Africa it is said that there are two hungers: the lesser hunger and the greater hunger (Handy 1997). Both hungers reflect survival; one of the flesh and one of the mind. Perhaps it can also be said of teachers: there are two hungers--the lesser hunger framed in value-adding and the greater hunger, adding value. If we are to retain our sense of self-worth, we, as teachers, must move from constantly serving others (value-adding a service) and instead nourish that greater hunger: our need to continuously renew, revitalize, recharge, thus adding value to our lives and therefore our work.
